The distinctive dark-red sandstone building of the National Museum of Cambodia houses a rich and wonderful collection of Khmer art, including sculpture, relics and artefacts, dating from prehistoric times to the present.  The museum is located west of the former Royal Cremation Ground, a rather scruffy patch of land which doubles as an impromptu soccer pitch.

î The museum is open to public in 1918.

î The building was designed in a hybrid of Khmer and European styles by the French archaeologist and scholar, George Groslier.

 

The museum comprises four linked galleries which form a rectangle around a leafy courtyard.
